Quality standards of the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft
The special additional features in the service and leisure department that have a special meaning within rural tourism are hardly not considered by the five-star-classification of the German Tourism Organisation DTV because it concentrates on the quality standard of the accommodation. The Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft für Urlaub auf dem Bauernhof und Landtourismus in Deutschland e.V. as well as their länder members have therefore taken the initiative. They developed a system to improve quality and offer that meets exactly the requirements of the member farms and its guests.
Holiday farms, vineyards, ranches and fish farms as well as holidays in the country offer the guests very special and different holiday experiences. They are offered, advertised and awarded by the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft alone. Every quality label represents a unique sort of holiday and appeals to an individual target group. The labels show the guests precisely the different offers and features of the members and represent a quality standard to the farms at the same time.
Remark: The concept of quality standard in rural tourism that is presented here is still in construction. A complete revision and a respective classification as well as maybe recognition of our member farms has not been done in all the länder so far. Moreover, a data bank consultation of the respective farms on the internet has not been developed either.

Guest can expect the following features of their hosts that have been awarded with the quality label:
“Recognized holiday in the country” according to the criteria of the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft means that the holiday accommodation is located on a former farm or in a rural village. You can be sure that the accommodation makes a good impression and that the furnishing quality is proved which is usually done according to a classification by the DTV. Being on the farm your hosts will take good care of you and provide you enough green areas and fields from where you are able to go for walks, to hike or to go on a cycling tour. You are welcome to relax and enjoy the nature.
Additionally, there is an offer provided for you of at least three of the following features:
- offer of groceries and regional foods from own or regional production
- at least one organised activity in the rural area weekly (e.g. guided hiking tour)
- animal zoo
- garden and green field area to relax
Hosts who are awarded as a “recognised holiday farm” according to the criteria of the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft can ensure that the holiday accommodation is located directly on a farm that is fully or partially run by a farmer and his family. Even a plain crop and field farm is expected to provide (at least) some small animal to pet on the farm. A good impression and a proved quality standard are obvious. You can ensure that you are well taken take of by the farm family and that sufficient green fields and areas from where you are able to go for walks, to hike or to go on a cycling tour, are provided on the farm for you.
Additionally, there is an offer provided for you of at least three of the following features:
- a guided tour by the farmer showing the farm
- at least one organised activity in the rural area or on the farm weekly (e.g. guided hiking tour)
- offer of groceries and regional foods from own or regional production
- helping with the farm work (depending on season and weather conditions)
A “recognized holiday on a vineyard” offers a proved quality standard and makes a good impression. The vineyard is usually or partially run. The farm family takes good care of you and provides you enough green fields and areas from where you are able to go for walks, to hike or to go on a cycling tour as well as to enjoy nature and to just relax. You can take part in wine tasting on all farms.
Additionally, there is an offer provided for you of at least three of the following features:
- a guided tour by the farmer showing the farm
- at least one organised activity in the rural area or on the farm weekly (e.g. guided hiking tour on the vineyard)
- offer of groceries and regional foods from own or regional production
- helping with the vine harvest (depending on season and weather conditions)
If you book holiday on a “recognized ranch” you stay in a holiday apartment, house or guest-room that are located on a ranch in a rural village. The ranch is proved by quality standard and makes a good impression. The ranch family takes good care of you and provides you enough green fields and areas from where you are able to go for walks, to hike or to go on a cycling tour as well as to enjoy nature and to just relax. But of course the horses are the centre of attention and the horseback riding. Suitable riding places are provided on the ranch as well as a large riding hall. You can take a course in horseback riding, volting and driving a horse and cart on the farm and take part in an excursion by horse, all guided by qualified members of the ranch. The ranch also provides an adequate accommodation for guest horses. The school horses and the equipment are all in a good shape.
A “recognized fish farm” offers a proved quality standard and a good impression. The fish farm is usually full or partly run. The farm offers enough opportunities to relax and to enjoy nature. The family of the fish farm will take good care of you. The centre of attention, however, is the fishing at the various lakes and waters. The farm meets the requirements of infrastructure, boats, cooling facilities, etc. Moreover, there is an offer provided for you of at least three of the following features:
- a guided tour by the farmer showing the farm and a fishing tour
- at least one organised activity having to do with fishing weekly (e.g. a fishing evening, smoking course)
- offer of fish and regional foods from own or regional production
- helping with the fishing (depending on season and weather conditions)
