Burg Kriebstein
Saxony´ s Oberlausitz (Upper Lusatia) region is the most perfect place for those who like to do sports, be outdoors and enjoy nature. There are more than 3,000 km of cycling and hiking paths within the region. On one of Saxony’s famous “house-tour” (“Umgebindehäuser-Tour”) showing traditional architecture of typical houses and located in the mountain region of the Oberlausitz (Upper Lusatia) and the Zittau-mountains, you can see what East Germany is like. Moreover, you get to experience the cycling track “Froschweg” “frog path” which goes along Germany’s largest heath land and pond region. Cycling on the flat cycling path you can listen to the frogs making noises in the water. On the former trade markets and pilgrimage routes “Via Sacra” “Sacred Road” you can discover the unique 16 sacred buildings the region offers and the fantastic art treasures of the border triangle Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic.

The “Malerweg” “path of the painters” is marked by dramatic ravines, strange rock formations and breathtaking views. Depending on the weather conditions and the season, you will be impressed by the light which makes trees, ferns and sandstones appear in all kinds of beautiful images. So put your digital camera aside for some moments and grab a paintbrush and some colour!

Kletterer in der sächsischen Schweiz

Discover the Saxon Switzerland, a region which has been marked by artists from Switzerland. Get some peace and quiet and enjoy the stunning view of the rock formations. And what’s more is that music is even linked here with nature. The music festival “Sandstein & Musik” “Sandstone & Music” invites you to enjoy the unique sounds in churches, castles and stone pits.

Radtour durch das sächsische Elbland

In Saxony’s Elbland area you are able to discover around 90km-hiking paths, such as the famous “Weinwanderweg” and the “Elbradweg” which leads you through the smallest German vineyard between the town of Pirna and Diesbar-Seußnitz. On steep hills, the dry stone wall catches the warmth of the sun and transforms the grapes into delicious wines. You can smell the wine, taste it and of course, drink it. We recommend you to see a winemaker who will certainly try some good wines with you. Those who prefer to relax instead of being active can go on board of the historical pedal steamer and enjoy the vineyard or ride the “Lößnitzdackel” which takes you on narrow railways along the stunning vineyards from where you have a beautiful view of the area.

Saxony ’s historic region is marked by numerous castles, traditional architecture, and heath lands. It is linked with about 800 years of Wettin sovereignty that is still presented in the castle of “Schloss Rochlitz” and the “Fürstenzug” of Dresden (“Procession of Princes”) represents the beauty of the past. The surrounding nature is perfect for hikers and those who like to go for long walks, cycle, do horseback riding or water sports. Along the paths you will find maps that inform you about the area and also give hints to find other interesting places, such as the “Dübener Heidemagnet” or the “Leipziger Neuseenland”.

In the mountain ranges of the Erzgebirge (Erz Mountains) you will find fantastic hiking and cycling paths of different levels of difficulty. They are well indicating you the way through nature. One of the most exciting and unique paths is called “Wanderweg der Deutschen Einheit”, that is linked with 800 years of coal-mining. We recommend you to visit the mining museum along the road “Silberstraße”. The radon galleries of the stannous coal-mine “Ehrenfriedersdorf” is famous for its 7° C temperature in an allergic- and dust-free atmosphere, located 100 m underground. Saxony’s mountain “Fichtelberg” reaches up to a height of 1,214m. From there you have a fantastic and picturesque view over Saxony and its neighbour Bohemia.
